RM2G71GTT–An old engraving of Harvey’s Torpedo being used. It is from a Victorian book of the 1890s on discoveries and inventions during the 1800s. The Harvey Torpedo was invented Britain in the late 1860s by Frederick Harvey and John Harvey. The torpedo involved an explosive charge attached to a line with buoys and winches. Here the ship is moving forwards. The mine’s towing lines are controlled on deck. The torpedo is pulled to the surface to be detonated at its target, the ship (left) – an improvement on existing designs where a mine was suspended on a spar over the bow of a ship.

HMS Inflexible was a Victorian ironclad battleship carrying her main armament in centrally placed turrets. The ship was constructed in the 1870s for the Royal Navy to oppose the perceived growing threat from the Italian Regia Marina in the Mediterranean.

RM2WJD3ED–HMS Brunswick and the Venguer, published 1904. HMS Brunswick was a 74-gun third rate ship-of-the-line of the Royal Navy, launched on 30 April 1790 at Deptford. She was first commissioned in the following month under Sir Hyde Parker for the Spanish Armament but was not called into action. When the Russian Armament was resolved without conflict in August 1791, Brunswick took up service as a guardship in Portsmouth Harbour. She joined Richard Howe's Channel Fleet at the outbreak of the French Revolutionary War and was present at the battle on Glorious First of June where she fought a hard action
