The Kayans are a ethnic group of the Karenni population, a minority of the Tibetan-Burmese language. They are also called Padaung. In 1990 due to a conflict with the Burmese military regime, many tribes took refuge in Thailand. They now live with an uncertain legal status in the border villages, living mainly with tourism due to the typical Kayan women's costume: neck rings. The Kayan population is estimated at seven thousand members.
