When Austin Osman Spare’s studio in Walworth Road was destroyed during the height of Blitz in London in 1941, the artist went to live with an old sweetheart and childhood friend, Ada Millicent Pain at her home in Brixton. As the correspondence between the two which accompanies the present work indicates, Pain would remain a loyal friend and supporter of the artist for the rest of her life. Following his exhibitions in 1936, 1937 and 1938 which were very well received, Spare was about to enter
We are very grateful to Robert Ansell for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.

Artwork auctioned at seven times the upper estimate price
The work Visualization Steps Out by Austin Osman Spare was worth GBP 47,500.00 (€ 53,919.57) to a buyer in November 2017. This price was achieved in the auction Modern/British Art Online at Christies in London and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of GBP 6,000.00 many times over. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Austin Osman Spare; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Nude, Charlotte Newman sold at auction in December 2015 with the realized price of GBP 43,750.00 (€ 59,410.40).
