Austin Osman Spare (1886–1956) was an English artist and occultist, known for his contributions to both the world of art and esoteric practices. Born in London, Spare showed early artistic promise and attended the Royal College of Art, although he later dropped out, dissatisfied with the formal training. He gained initial fame through exhibitions at the Bruton Gallery in London and even received a silver medal from the Royal Academy, but he gradually drifted away from mainstream recognition to focus on his more mystical and magical interests.
Spare's art is characterized by its intricate line work, symbolism, and often erotic or mystical themes. He developed a unique system of magic and a set of theories around "sigils," which are symbolic representations used in magical practices. His work was heavily influenced by a range of sources, from classical art to Eastern philosophy and occult traditions.
