In the couple of months I've had this instrument, I've found it to be an exceptionally worthwhile purchase. The piano sounds are great for practice or for live performance (haven't used for studio work), and sound great either solo or when performing with larger ensembles. The electric piano sounds, in my opinion, are particularly impressive. Whilst obviously not quite the same timbre as a real rhodes, the patches available still create a beautiful sound, and are more than satisfactory for me. I have also had lots of fun using the clavinet patches alongside the various effects that can be applied to them. Additionally, the interface is extremely intuitive. Had no issues figuring out how just about everything worked pretty much straight away. Appreciate how tactile it is, kinda seems like Yamaha's going for a Nord-y vibe there. Finally, the action is amazing. I tried out the Roland RD-88 and the Korg SV-2 when I was deciding on an instrument, and for me, the action on this instrument was by far the best. Feels intuitive (don't know how to explain it).

I would unfortunately say that most of the Sub section feels pretty much pointless. Can't think of any context in which I would need a pretty dodgy sounding saxophone or steel string guitar patch. Perhaps once I update the instrument I'll get some more decent-sounding patches, but by and large this section wasn't particularly useful, and can't see myself using it on gigs all that much at all. That being said, some of the pads sound pretty nice, especially when combined with the acoustic/electric piano patches. The leads are fairly decent, though I'm by no means a synthesiser expert. If you're hoping for an array of amazing synth patches and lots of customisability, you're going to be disappointed. Organ sounds were not amazing, but work well enough for me. I personally would never use them enough to justify purchasing a more expensive instrument with drawbars (e.g. a Nord).

Overall, if you're mainly a piano player hoping for a nice sound and great action, this instrument is perfect for you. I would argue the sounds available in the piano and E. piano sections are easily on par with most Nord patches, and this is a couple thousand cheaper. If you're more into synthesisers and modelling/customisability, I wouldn't recommend this instrument. Hope this helps!
Simplicity and sound: why the CP88 is my Go-To Keyboard
Denis· Review provided by Yamaha · October 15, 2024
The CP88 is the instrument I've always wanted, and it has truly delivered. The keybed is fantastic-responsive and expressive, making it a pleasure to play. I love the simplicity of its design, which allows for easy navigation and creativity without any unnecessary complexity. The vintage feel of the user interface adds a nice touch that enhances the overall playing experience. Whether I'm performing or practicing or creating, the CP88 provides a warm, rich sound that I can rely on. I'm super happy to have this instrument in my gear! Definitely recommended.

Great piano action feel and build quality.

The action, touch sensitivity and feel of the keyboard is great. The piano has a very solid feel, yet is still light enough to easily handle. Also the layout and controls are very well organized and user friendly. One area that I think could be improved is the sound library. My take is that the piano and e.piano sections sound realistic, the SUB section could be better. In particular, the strings and brass sounds could be enhanced, although the solo saxes which were added with the last software update are good. Ideally, being able to expand the sound library (a la Nord) could elevate the instrument to best in class.
Piano technician chooses the CP88

I was advised by a musician friend to buy a particular keyboard. At the store, I sat with it for over an hour, trying for a sound and feel that reached me. The talented sales guy finally took me aside and redirected me to the CP88. I was instantly satiated. A month into it, and the keyboard is teaching me to express differently with each sound, along with teaching me to adjust the vast sound flexibilities. I still love my acoustic grand, but this CP88 has opened many windows of creativity.
