We bought this for a friend who would be hiking alone on the Appalachian trail. He started in Georgia hiking and is going for 45 days north to Tennessee. He sends us messages at each check point. It gives us some peace knowing he is ok. The location of where he starts the day or week is put in a message to our email so we can open on google maps and sometimes a picture of the shelter on the trail is available. I know there is a newer version but this has helped tracking his journey.

It is exactly as advertised. Works great and is easy to use. I use it in tracking mode up and down the West Coast of North America and have taken it into Mexico as well. Awesome.

Shame on me for not doing better research on this before purchasing. At $150 +/- per year for a service subscription, I think this product is a poor value. Most Garmin (and perhaps other brands) GPS units will connect to Garmin Connect for free to give real time location tracking to someone at home.
