February 10, 2015This is a great tool for seeing with a set of "infrared eyes". It lets you see temperature differences in materials of all kinds to aid in troubleshooting. We use it to monitor bearing temperatures on our farm equipment. Occasional monitoring of bearings can provide 'normal' operating temperatures. If a bearing is starting to fail, we can see a temperature that is running higher than normal. We can then determine a course of action before total failure (if it's a sealed bearing that's hard to replace, we may drill a hole in the seal and shoot some grease in to buy some time and replace during the evening, etc.). Much better than finding out after it's too late. It's also good for checking electrical contacts that may be running hot due to electrical resistance and causing issues(contactors, terminations, etc.) I've used the higher end FLIR equipment in the past that superimposes a visual camera image onto the thermal image and also assigns a temperature to every graphic pixel (downloadable for spreadsheet use, etc.). While that is nice, it really is overkill for what we need it for, and cost a lot more for those additional features. The TG165 does surprisingly well for a thermal only image and the lower affiliated resolution. For the $500 price tag though, it's definitely worth the money. It comes with a microSD card that allows you to save images - great way to convey info to anyone that needs to understand the issue at hand. If budget is an issue (and it usually is), seriously consider this tool, as it gives a lot of bang for the buck.

December 26, 2018Whether or not this is a "good" product depends on what you are using it for. I have a very nice Flir camera and this does not compare at all. Of course it costs about 30 times what this one does as well.
If low resolution is not an issue this is a very handy compact tool. I found the image to be more clear on B/W when I have had difficulty determining what object is hot.
Overall it does perform as it is intended, just don't think this is going to take the place of an expensive camera when resolution is needed. It does reduce using the expensive camera (and the associated damage risk) when low resolution is acceptable.
I do wish the range was adjustable, but again I am spoiled by the much more expensive one with a plethora of options!
BEWARE: Manufacturing flaw in attaching face plate

June 9, 2021Have ordered these twice because the first three were ALL BROKE in the same place. When originally received each of the face plates fell off when unboxed. Noticed that the face plate was attached with very small screws, and the plastic bracket that attaches the face plate was broke(Noticed small plastic bits inside unit). Thought the case may have been dropped in transport, so re-ordered. Same thing was wrong in next batch. Defiantly a FLAW.
Great piece

January 16, 2018As an Automotive Mechanic this was the obvious choice for the type of testing I primarily use it for. The online research directly from Flir put this tool on my short list. I often use it in confined spaces, therefore this model is ideal. Directly compared to a high end thermometer that has served me well, I now reach for this every time. Oddly enough the thermometer was as expensive as this tool. The company backs it with a great warranty. Files are easily transferred with the supplied cord to a USB port. It is a great addition to my diagnostic arsenal.
