August 14, 2024I purchased my Pioneer DMH-W4660NEX at Best Buy a couple of months ago from their Westminster, CA, store where it was also professionally installed by their team via an appointment. So far, it works flawlessly, and exactly as advertised. The install process took about 1 1/2 hours for my 2005 Toyota Camry, roughly as anticipated. I had purchased, separately, from another source, the steering wheel control harness, and a USB port that replaces the never-used dashboard cigarette lighter. They did not complain about installing those separate items, and did a great job. I strongly recommend the steering wheel control harness be installed, since it avoids having to reach over to the touch screen when adjusting volume, changing mode, and advancing to the next selection. Also, the USB port is a very nice touch, and now I keep a USB stick plugged into it that contains my favorite tunes, music videos, and other audio/visual files. I have an Android phone, and it reliably and quickly connects with the unit's Bluetooth-enabled Android Auto with my phone in my pocket. All of the phone's Android Auto-enabled functions work flawlessly on the Pioneer unit. This includes GPS navigation, Apps such as Spotify, iHeartRadio, phone, Pandora, weather, texts, Audacy, Messenger, etc., etc. The built-in Siri works great. Phone conversations come through loud and clear to the car's speakers, and the mic that they installed is unobtrusively located just below the speedometer, so as to be as close as possible to the driver's mouth. There are no exposed wires for that or anything else. I did not opt for a backup camera, but you can have them install one if you choose to have one. Videos on the Pioneer are sharp and clear thanks to the more than adequate 720P resolution and bright LED screen. The installers also complied with the law by wiring the unit so that video on the dashboard screen cannot be watched unless the parking brake is on, for driver safety. But if you choose to add a screen for the back seat passengers, they can continue to watch video while the car is moving. Either way, the audio portion continues to play, even in the front, while driving. It's okay with me, and what is fun is playing a music video, and at a red light, engaging the emergency brake to watch the video while awaiting a green light. As a result, sometimes I almost wish that the red light would last a bit longer. My only criticism, and a minor one, is that the upper left on-screen selector icon can be a bit difficult to activate, so I end up sometimes having to press it multiple times before it works. The icon's very small size makes it a somewhat difficult target for your finger, especially while driving. But again, it's really just a minor annoyance.

June 30, 2024Installation: It was simple; however, I ordered a new harness designed for my vehicle. It did not come with an orange/ white stripped wire (Display Dimmer). So I removed the pin and wire for my former harness and applied it to the new one. Now, the display dims when the car exterior lights are on.
GPS antenna location: I placed it right next to my solar sensor for my auto climate control. I wasn’t about to apply that ugly metal mat/ antenna to my dash. So I just applied the antenna alone, painted the visible wire to match the color of my dash and boom! I was in my garage with the door closed, and when I pulled up maps, it knew my exact location.
Fan Noise: If you’re sitting in your car with no media playing, of course you will hear the fan. But just how many of us do that? The db’s of the fan are far from being loud. Look at it as being equivalent to a computer fan.
Screen Temporment: Remember these three things. Clean screen, clean figure tips, and a light touch. My screen has been very responsive contrary to others that have posted other wise.
Features/ Functionality: I saw one reviewer comment on the lack of functionality. I believe this unit to be loaded with options, and if you follow directions, you’ll be able to utilize all the functionality this head unit has to offer. Unfortunately, it won’t “auto vac” my car. ☹
Speaker and Subwoofer Configurations: Plenty of options to choose from.
I am a little disappointed in CarPlay though. Customization is limited. It appears that you are stuck with the default apps (Phone, Music, Maps, Messages, Now Playing, NEX, Podcast, Calendar, and Settings) and unable to add a new one to the screen. I saw a few examples on YouTube, and it appears that if your car come with CarPlay, your options are greater.
Pioneer’s Car AV Assist is a pain to set up. In fact, you cannot use Apple’s CarPlay and Car AV Asist in unisense. They are incompatible with each other. I chose to stick with CarPlay. The features in Car Play are very similar to that of Car AV Assist.
Firmware Updates/ Programming/ Pairing/ Wifi: There is an important task before playing with any of the settings, UPDATE the Radio’s Firmware (Current Firmware Update March, 2024), and UPDATE your iPhone or Android Phone. Trust me, you’ll save yourself from being stressed out and getting headaches. I suggest performing the firmware update for the head unit via the supplied USB-C cable. Don’t worry there is an adapter for those that continue to use the USB-A cable. It is a secure connection. And besides, you haven’t set up Car Assist yet. So do yourself a favor.
I found pairing my phone to the head unit to be the easiest step in the whole process. Now connecting Wi-Fi? well, that presents more of a challenge. I visited Pioneer’s website and printed step by step instructions on how to connect the head unit via Wi-Fi with your phone set as the Hotspot. From my experience, be certain that your Wi-Fi option is on. Pioneer Tech Support told me it should be off. On the contrary, it needs to be enabled.

August 31, 2024As a former employee who only left the company when I joined the military— I love Best Buy and I love Geek Squad. I still have all my stock in the company for my years there. But this is absolutely embarrassing. I always recommend to people that they should buy Geek Squad excellent items as they come in the exact same condition as New and include all of the original accessories. This item just showed up. The metal around the frame is dented, and it is missing every single accessory besides the main wiring harness. I purchased the Geek Squad excellent version. i’m stationed overseas so the return process is gonna take about two weeks to get back to Best Buy and another two weeks to get my new item. This is all because the item I purchased was improperly certified as excellent.

October 20, 2023I want to like this very expensive wireless CarPlay receiver more, especially given the price, but it has been a bit of a headache to use sometimes. When it's actively being used for CarPlay, it's quite nice — the screen is pretty good and relying on the CarPlay interface works fine.
Otherwise, it's pretty clunky. The built in interface is laggy and when you press the screen, it takes about a second for it to react. Something as simple as adjusting the volume can be strange because when you tap the screen to adjust it, the beep and change of volume doesn't happen instantaneously.
My biggest gripe, is when connecting to wireless CarPlay, it doesn't automatically launch CarPlay. You have to press the show apps button then the launch CarPlay button every time you hop in the car. There is no setting and this is confirmed by many other owners of this in different forums. Three firmware updates since purchase have not resolved this problem. (Also wireless firmware update always fails — only USB update works.)
I give two stars because Pioneer does not provide any support and refuses to fix this issue.
