AutoEQ and Auto Time alignment is amazing
Benjamin· Review provided by crutchfield.com · December 24, 2024
Love this head unit. I installed it in a 2003 Chevy Suburban 1500. Bought the Crutchfield recommended, higher end install package to retain all the features and everything worked without issues. Steering wheel controls etc work great. Using the stock Bose amp and speakers which sound way better on this head unit right from the start. I bought a calibration mic to use the auto EQ and auto time alignment features of this head unit and after calibration, it sounds absolutely amazing. The difference it made, even with stock speakers, is astounding. Android Auto works great and getting free navigation by hooking your phone up to the unit is a great feature. I highly recommend paying the extra money for Crutchfield's ready harness service. Install was a breeze. The hardest part was trying to figure out where to put the extra control unit and all the wiring that is needed to retain the stock steering wheel controls etc. This head unit is a single din height main unit with a 2 din height screen attached to it which helped a lot. I ended up zip tying the extra control box on top of the stereo which made fitting everything easy. Crutchfield's instructions said that I may have to cut a support bracket in the back of the dash to get enough room. With this head unit, I did not have to cut this bracket out. It just barely fit in there with enough clearance for the rear fan and all the wiring harnesses.
not sure it was worth it

Install was trickier than I'd expected. There were a lot of extra harnesses and connections that weren't needed, creating additional confusion. It required a call to Crutchfield support which was helpful, and I consider myself pretty handy/tech savvy.

Some of the things that bother me with this head unit are:

1) there's no real "home" screen. There is, but it's not clear that's where you live. So going there is a bit opaque.

2) carplay is great when it works - if you like spotify, maps, and messaging/phone, because that's for the most part all you'll have

3) it was a bit buggy for me the day after install for no apparent reason. The rear camera would turn on on its own, and then all of a sudden I couldn't get spotify to play songs (on bluetooth or carplay). I would hit play and it wouldn't. Looked through a lot of forums/threads and there's not a lot on the topic, but someone said they got around it by turning off bluetooth on their iphone before getting in the car. Once I did that it allowed me to play spotify music on carplay. Not a good workaround.

Other issues are:

- you lose the factory microphone so you need to run the new wired mic in a spot that makes sense. I need to move mine because people can't hear me where I installed it

- The steering wheel controls aren't matching up to what I configured on the idatalink maestro setup. So I'm not sure what I need to do, probably pull it all back out and reconfigure?
Great radio, bad instructions

The Pioneer DMH-C2550NEX is a great head unit and terrific upgrade to the stock jeep radio. We did a self install on a 2018 Wrangler JK and for the most part it was easy to do. There are a few significant details about this install that caused us some grief.

Our install was with the Maestro unit (iDatalink Maestro ADS-MRR Interface Module) to maintain steering wheel controls and car data along with the Crutchfield custom adapter cable and the Brandmotion backup camera. First, the custom adapter cable is a must. It reduces install time significantly. The Brandmotion requires video, ground, and power connections. Best to run video and ground from the camera to the head unit. Don't pull from a tail light. Power lead is available at the head unit side to tie it into the head unit power. You will need extra wire for the ground line. When connecting the Maestro, I used velcro to attach it on top of the head unit and keep it in place. The instructions say connect the unit via the W/R port on the head unit but with Pioneer it goes into the AUX port. The video cable from the backup camera goes into the BROWN connector not yellow. We trimmed the metal mounting plate inside the dash by cutting off the bottom half with a hack saw. It was preventing the unit from sitting flush with the dash. Its needed for the factory radio but not an aftermarket one. To use carplay you need access to the USB port on the back of the radio. Run and extension cable somewhere (purchased separately).
Excellent head unit overall

Does everything a modern car does. You can even add a Maestro module to replicate any factory controls (steering wheel, HVAC etc) but, I don't need that feature. Touch screen is almost as good as a modern phone. A little slow but, not bad at all. Unit boots quickly, responds fast and the screen is easy to see even in high glare situations. Really like how fast it switches to the rearview camera. It's almost immediately as I shift into reverse. Buttons are nice and crisp. I hate touch buttons for volume etc. I bought the separate Sirius XM module and it works seamlessly. Excellent clarity. The one button screen off is super convenient for if you have any sensitive information onscreen. I'll definitely be taking advantage of the additional inputs for cameras! So far, it's the best head unit I've ever owned
