Warriors young gun Reece Walsh arrested in Surfers Paradise

The Warriors are currently investigating the incident involving the RLPA Rookie of the Year.

Warriors young gun Reece Walsh has been arrested at a Surfers Paradise nightclub, with police investigating possible drug and public order offences.

The star NRL fullback was taken to Surfers Paradise Police Station after he failed to comply with a move-on direction, according to Queensland Police.

“At 12.15am this morning, a 19-year-old Nerang man was issued with a direction to move-on from an area in Surfers Paradise,” a Queensland Police statement read.

“Around 1.00am, police saw the man had returned to the same area in an alleged contravention of this direction.

“The man was arrested and taken to the Surfers Paradise Police Station where he assisted police with their inquiries.

“He was released a short time later with police now investigating whether the man was involved in drug and public order offences.”

The Warriors and NRL Integrity Unit are currently investigating the incident which occurred hours after Penrith’s preliminary final victory over the Storm.

“Warriors CEO Cameron George has confirmed fullback Reece Walsh was arrested following an incident on the Gold Coast last night,” the Warriors said.

“George added while the matter is under investigation the club would not be making further comment until a later stage.”

The 19-year-old won the RLPA’s Rookie of the Year award last week, capping off a stellar season in which he was let go by the Broncos.

He is one of the favourites to win the NRL’s Rookie of the Year award during Monday’s Dally M awards night.

Warriors coach Nathan Brown shifted captain and superstar fullback Roger Tuivasa-Sheck to accommodate Walsh and the young gun responded in kind, scoring nine tries and setting up 11 others from 16 appearances.

It was enough for Queensland coach Paul Green to call him up for a State of Origin debut after just seven games, although Walsh never played after suffering an injury the day before the game.

The Warriors were eliminated from the premiership race weeks ago, however many NRL stars have remained in Queensland to enjoy post-season celebrations out of lockdown.

The incident is yet another black eye on the NRL’s young off-season.

A spate of off-field issues have erupted at the Brisbane Broncos in recent weeks, with outgoing playmaker Anthony Milford arrested on assault charges and young forward Jordan Riki suffering an injury following a fight with a teammate.
