Now that filming of Ryan Murphy’s first season of Fox’s Scream Queens is officially over, Emma Roberts, who plays sorority queen Chanel, is saying goodbye to her long blonde locks — for now. On Instagram, she posted a photo of herself with short hair and a pair of Warby Parker sunglasses, bidding adieu to her character. “That’s a wrap on filming #ScreamQueens bye Chanel hello short hair,” she wrote, tagging her stylists from Los Angeles-based salon Nine Zero One. E! noted that her character Chanel’s long hair was the result of extensions anyway, so Roberts can easily reprise her throne at Kappa Kappa Tau.

But Roberts isn’t the first “Emma” to cut her hair as a cathartic release from her role onscreen. In 2010, after filming the final Harry Potter movie, 20-year-old Emma Watson got a pixie cut — a stark contrast to Hermione Granger’s iconic bushy waves. “I didn’t get to experiment with dyeing and chopping off my hair like most teenagers,” Watson told Metro in 2010. “I also felt, right, I’m 20, I’m not a little girl any more. I’d been on Harry Potter for ten years so I needed to mark the end of it in some way. I needed a drastic change and that’s what the crop was all about.”

A major chop is a way to signal a fresh start, and it is a move that can impact a career. Twiggy’s modeling career didn’t take off until she got a pixie cut in 1966. In the season two premiere of Felicity, Keri Russell chopped off her cover-girl curls—and refused to wear a wig even after her ratings plummeted. In 2014, fashion designer Diane Von Furstenberg told ELLE.com about a time in her life when she didn’t want to be a fashion designer: “I cut all my hair off and moved to Paris — there is no stronger signal that a woman is ready for a change than when she chops off all of her hair!”
