'Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas' sign may get crosswalk

USATODAY
Tourists take pictures in front of the Las Vegas welcome sign. County officials are working on a crosswalk to make it safer for pedestrians.

One of the must-take tourist photos in Vegas is posing in front of the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Nevada" sign at the south end of the Strip.

But the parking lot is small, and some folk dart dangerously across Las Vegas Boulevard at a spot where there is no crosswalk or traffic light.

A report presented to county commissioners Tuesday gave officials the option of pedestrian bridges over the boulevard, a crosswalk and lights or the more drastic, costly step of moving the sign to one side of the boulevard.

The Las Vegas Sun reported that "commissioners advised staff to work on building a crosswalk across Las Vegas Boulevard to the sign. ... The crosswalk was the cheapest, easiest option and would cost about $300,000 to install. It would likely be built as part of a $500,000 expansion to the sign's parking lot that commissioners approved in April."

The Sun said a crosswalk/traffic light solution could be ready by early 2014. KTNV-TV said commissioners eventually want a bridge and asked staff to figure how to cover the cost.
