About Louisburgh
Louisburgh is a wonderful holiday destination for a self-catering holiday in County Mayo. This small town is located on the R335 regional road in the southwest corner of Clew Bay in County Mayo.
The vibrant and colourful town of Westport is 13 miles away. On route to and from Westport, you will pass by Croagh Patrick and scenic Clew Bay, which contains Ireland’s best example of sunken drumlins. Legend has it that Clew Bay has 365 islands in it, ‘an island for every day of the year’. Croagh Patrick is a holy mountain that towers over Clew Bay and brings walkers and pilgrims from all over the world to this part of Ireland.
In Louisburgh you will find a selection of grocery shops, restaurants, and pubs often with live Irish music sessions. The town is located on the Bunowen River making Louisburgh a wonderful base for a fishing holiday. The town is also 1.5km from Carrowmore Beach and 3.2km from Old Head Beach. Ideally, there is a tackle shop located in the town with a great selection of fishing supplies. From Old Head Beach you can also try stand-up paddle boarding.
Bus Éireann local route 450 (Louisburgh-Westport) provides two to three journeys in each direction (please note timetables can change). The nearest rail service is at Westport railway station, where several trains arrive/depart daily from Westport to Dublin Heuston via Athlone.
On your next holiday in Louisburgh, you will be surrounded by magnificent scenery and an array of popular walks. Mayo’s scenery ranges from lush green fields to desert-like rocky cliffs along part of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way.
Explore Mayo via the Great Western Greenway, a magnificent walking or cycling trail that starts in Westport and ends on Achill Island accessible by a land bridge from Mulranny. Or venture south via scenic Doo Lough and visit the picturesque village of Leenane.
Explore Clew Bay, climb Croagh Patrick, cycle the Great Western Greenway, or explore the bustling town of Westport. Louisburgh is a much-loved and popular holiday destination in Ireland, perfect for a self-catering family holiday, couples escape, or group getaway with friends.
