Madeira Airport Has Cancelled All Flights Due To The Severe Weather

Holiday Resorts in Spain and Portugal are under warning as Storm Oscar arrives

Storm Oscar is expected to bring severe rain and strong winds to Spain and Portugal, so travellers to these countries should prepare accordingly. Tourists visiting the Canary Islands through Thursday, June 8 should be aware of the possibility of severe weather, as reported by the British Foreign Office. The FO recommends checking in with your tour operator or lodging provider before departure and following the directions of local authorities.

Additionally, the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IMPA) and the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) have both released weather advisories.

The storm will deliver non-stop precipitation until Wednesday, when it will turn north and travel over the Atlantic to the United Kingdom. The storm system is expected to get there later this week, delivering temperatures of up to 30 degrees Celsius.

The shore and mountains of Madeira are under a red alert. Storm Oscar has already caused significant damage to Madeira, a Portuguese island, as the weather has forced the cancellation of more than 30 flights. Catering and airline service offices, according to ANA, will be open throughout the storm beyond of normal business hours. Passengers who have been impacted by the inclement weather will find assistance from terminal staff. Because of this, the organization issued a statement urging travellers to confirm their flights in advance, so they wouldn't have to wait in long lines at the airport.

The southern and coastal regions of Madeira have been given red alerts by IMPA due to "heavy and continuous" rain. In addition, a warning has been issued for the island's mountainous regions, where sustained winds of 110 km per hour are possible.

Wind and rain are also blowing strong in La Palma and Tenerife, as the Canary Islands will also be pummelled by strong winds and torrential rain. Strong gusts of up to 88 kilometres per hour are expected to pound the westernmost islands the hardest. However, even bigger and more popular locations such as Tenerife and Gran Canaria might be affected. The islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura will not be directly hit by the storm's eye, but they will certainly see significant rainfall nevertheless.

On both La Palma and La Gomera, AEMET issued orange weather alerts due to the potential for winds of up to 90 km/h. A yellow warning for rain and wind has been issued for all other islands. Large waves and localized floods are also a possibility in certain areas.

Yesterday, ten planes that were supposed to land at Tenerife North Airport had to be rerouted due to the poor weather.
