What's it like to live in Mount Eden?

Property viewings help you get a feel for individual homes, but how can you learn about a suburb as a whole? Well, as well as walking its streets, this is a question of good old fashioned research.
To help you decide which is the best suburb in Auckland to buy in, we’ll be exploring some of the city’s commonly searched areas, so you can make up your mind on what’s right for you.
Today, it’s the turn of Mount Eden.

For the six months to 31 December 2022, Mt. Eden house prices* looked like this:

Life in Mount Eden
Lying 4km to the South of Auckland CBD, the community of Mt. Eden centres around Mt. Eden Village. This collection of restaurants, cafes and small stores means you’ll never be short of great places to eat, shop and socialise.
But that’s not all Mount Eden offers to its residents and visitors. Among the suburb’s standouts are:
- Er...Mount Eden: Maungawhau (Mt. Eden) is the dormant volcano from which the suburb takes its name. A stroll (or jog, for the braver among us) up to its summit will reward you with panoramic views of most of Auckland’s most recognisable attractions. It’s also well worth taking a trip to the nearby Maungawhau Visitor Experience Centre to learn about the Māori cultural history and geology of the site.
- Eateries: You’re really spoilt for choice when it comes to eating and drinking in Mt. Eden. Along Dominion Road you’ll find a buzzing and culturally diverse cuisine to suit every taste. Alternatively, the stylish cafes and bars on Mt. Eden road offer a great place to relax with a book or catch up with friends.
Transport
Transport links are crucial when house hunting. Not only can a poorly connected neighbourhood turn a dream home into a house of horrors logistically, being well connected does your property’s value a host of favours.
Being so centrally located, especially if you live on the city side of Mt. Eden, it’s possible to walk into the CBD. For those a bit further out, it’s a great spot to cycle or e-bike into work.
Mt. Eden train station
Although Mt. Eden train station is currently closed as part of the City Rail Link (CRL) project. Once this reopens (2024), the project’s website states commuters will be able to get from Mt. Eden to Britomart in nine minutes. In the interim, a bus service (64) has been set up to connect Mt. Eden and Newmarket.

In addition to that interim service, Mt. Eden Village is well connected to both the CBD and other Auckland suburbs through the LINK services.
Motorway access
From Mt. Eden, it’s easy to hop onto the southern, northern and eastern motorway routes.
Mt. Eden's central location makes it easy to get around.
Schools in Mt. Eden
If you have kids, there are plenty of schools in and around the suburb, both public and private, for all ages:
1. Early childhood:
- Appleseed – Balmoral Road.
- Bearpark Early Childhood Centre – Akiraho Street.
- Daystar Early Learning Centre – View Road.
- Flying Start Kindergarten – Cromwell Street.
- Little Wonders Early Childhood Centre – Landscape Road.
- Maungawhau Playcentre – Marsden Avenue.
- Smart Start Montessori Preschool – Ellerton Road.
- Stepping Stones – Wairiki Road.
2. Junior schools:
- Mt Eden Normal Primary School – Valley Road.
- Maungawhau School – Ellerton Road.
- Auckland Normal Intermediate School – Poronui Street.
3. Senior schools:
- Eden Campus – Ngauruhoe Street.
- Auckland Grammar (boys only) – Mountain Road (Epsom).
- Epsom Girls’ Grammar School – Silver Road (Epsom).
