*Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery will close exhibitions as a preventive measure against the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.

In recent years there has been renewed international attention for Kazuo Shiraga (1924–2008), known as a key member of the Gutai Art Association that drove postwar Japanese avant-garde art. Born in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture, Shiraga started his career in 1954 (a year before joining the Gutai movement) with his “Foot Paintings” directly using his foot to paint on canvases spread out on the floor. Through this practice and exploration, he forged new frontiers in the art world. His radical move to give this approach a leading role in painting, when before physical movements (action/performance) had simply been methods of production, upturned artistic and social conventions as a breakthrough idea that returned the act of human creation to its primal roots. Shiraga continued with his cutting-edge principles of creation even after the Gutai Art Association disbanded, producing works with an overwhelming power to set everything within human existence – space, time, materiality, and movement – aflame, while at the same time deepening the unique beauty of oil painting through its drops of paint, bleeding edges, viscosity, fluidity, and vigor.
