Aisha Mohammadzai became famous across the world and a reluctant icon for women’s rights in Afghanistan when a picture of her mutilated face appeared on the cover of Time magazine in 2010. Now the beautiful young woman, whose nose and ears were cut off by her in-laws after she fled an abusive marriage, has appeared before the cameras again to reveal her new features.

Ms Mohammadzai, 22, who is also known as Bibi Aisha, says she is “happy” with the nose that surgeons in America have painstakingly built, using tissue from her forearm and her forehead.
