Charles Radlski ended up in intensive care while two other pupils were affected

THREE schoolchildren suffered horror burns when a kettle exploded in an after-school cooking lesson.

Charles Radlski, 12, was put in intensive care as the scorch marks on his face were so severe they became infected.

And furious Jo Griffin, 35, said her son Ryan, 12, “screamed in pain” after the camping appliance blew up and scalded him and a girl of 11 in woods behind Lumphinnans Primary, Cowdenbeath.

She said: “It was an accident waiting to happen — it’s terrible. I got a call around 3.45pm saying there had been an incident at the school and when I got there he was in the shower.

“He was screaming in pain — it was awful. He had been burnt badly on his back area. He said this kettle they had been using had water coming out of it and he turned his back and it exploded.

“They had been using the kettle for the last five weeks.”

Jo’s daughter Rosie, eight, was one of ten kids at the outdoor class but escaped uninjured.

It’s feared a plug left inside the Kelly Kettle caused a build-up of pressure which made it explode.

Shop worker Jo, from the town, added: “I was in shock. It could have been worse for the younger kids.

“My husband uses this type of kettle all the time for camping trips and he said the plug shouldn’t have been left inside it.

“My son’s a brave little fighter but he goes to high school after the summer. This has put a dampener on his last few weeks of primary school.

“It’s hard to tell if he’ll be scarred for life and we’re still going back and forth to hospital.”

Charles’ dad Wojtek said his son needed surgery at the Sick Children’s Hospital in Edinburgh after his face and shoulder were badly burned in the incident on June 12.

He said: “When my wife and I saw our son we both cried because his burns were so bad. He was vomiting with infection and in intensive care for 24 hours and is still in the hospital a week later.”

The 11-year-old girl was also said to be severely scalded.

Jo hit out at Fife Council and said: “The school has been excellent, phoning each day to make sure he’s okay. The council haven’t been in touch since it happened.”

The authority said it is investigating. Education boss Carrie Lindsay said: “Our thoughts are with the children who were injured.”
