Be One With Nature at this Mexican Resort

There are few places in the world that can boast the natural beauty and high-luxury of Cuixmala. Located in the breathtaking Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve in Jalisco, western Mexico, Cuixmala stewards its slice of Pacific coast-paradise with renowned precision and tender care.

Casa Cuixmala, once a holiday home of the late billionaire-politician Sir James Goldsmith, is the crown jewel of the estate: an opulent hotel-villa perched atop a verdant bluff overlooking the Pacific.

The estate now serves as an ultra-luxe eco-resort, where discerning travellers can immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the reserve while living in consummate luxury and comfort. Read on for a closer look at the resort’s stunning accommodations and activities on offer.

Cuixmala contains several diverse accommodations throughout the estate, all tied together by their unique blend of Moorish and mission-style architecture. The central villa of the estate, Casa Cuixmala, features four opulent, private suites which once housed the Goldsmith family on vacation. The suites all adjoin broad, open terraces that boast unobstructed views of the rolling Pacific waves, the serene nature reserve and lagoon as well as the majestic Rio Cuixmala.

Casa Cuixmala’s suites all surround the villa’s generous shared-living spaces, including the dreamy fountain garden outside and the regal main-hall, under its spectacular chevron dome. With no lobby or reception to speak of, this luxurious building feels more like a royal summer palace than a high-end hotel.

Scattered throughout the verdant estate are three stunning villas that each rival the Casa Cuixmala in their beauty and comfort. Casa la Playa stands practically within arms reach of the idyllic Playa Cuixmala, while the Casa Alborada sprawls lavishly amidst swaying coconut palms and vibrant bougainvilleas. Each of these self-contained villas features a private bar and playroom, and can accommodate up to eight adults in style and absolute serenity.

In the near distance, ten casitas of one, two or three-bedroom size dot the jungle landscape of the estate, charming guests with their traditional Mexican design and luxurious decor. These offer a much more intimate experience for couples or families to reconnect with nature and each other. The casitas all centre on the vibrant Casa Gomez, with a traditional Mexican restaurant, bar and lounge that guests can use as a shared clubhouse.

Cuixmala takes careful measures to operate harmoniously with the sublime natural reserve in which it is located, and its recreational offerings are carefully formulated to immerse visitors in nature while respecting its fragility.

Guests can mount-up like true caballeros, astride the estate’s loyal steeds to canter the majestic shorelines of Playa Cuixmala or walk the picturesque jungle trails that criss-cross the estate. Whisper-quiet electric tour boats meander through the lagoon and waterways of the reserve, where guests can spot the estate’s various native inhabitants, including the elusive freshwater crocodiles, iguanas and tropical birds.

Along the playa, surfing, snorkelling and kayaking tours take guests out among the waves to enjoy the powerful Pacific swells and vibrant marine life, from whales and dolphins to sea turtles and shimmering shoals of fish.

Whether guests have their sea-legs or riding boots at the ready, Cuixmala’s recreational activities allow its guests to fully immerse themselves in the wondrous natural environment of the reserve.

Committed to Ecology and Sustainability

Since its inception, Cuixmala has been committed to spreading a message of ecological stewardship and sustainability. The Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve was the first of its kind in Mexico, brought into existence in 1993 to protect a unique ecological zone on the coast of Jalisco. This zone was designated by presidential decree for ecological protection after repeated lobbying from the Cuixmala Ecological Foundation, an NGO founded by Sir James Goldsmith himself.

Cuixmala’s enduring commitment to preserving nature is on full display for the public to see. Guests have the option of embarking on personal tours through the estate’s sprawling organic farms, from where the estate’s kitchens and restaurants receive 90% of their ingredients.

Implementing traditional and biodynamic methods, the farms produce bountiful harvests and a range of herbs, fruits, grains and vegetables, without displacing the protected populations of wild animals that roam throughout the reserve. The estate’s farm, as well as its sister property, Hacienda de San Antonio, also provides the raw materials for a range of ointments, lotions and luxuries, including coffee, honey and even essential oils.

The estate in conjunction with the Cuixmala Ecological Foundation has also formulated a robust educational programme, to spread awareness about ecology and sustainability, and encourage the responsible and sustainable use of natural resources in Jalisco and beyond.

As part of the foundation’s commitment to environmental awareness, Cuixmala has been the site of research projects and nature documentaries alike, and the foundation has funded projects aimed at the rehabilitation of endangered species, as well as extensive research into ecological processes.

Cuixmala truly leads the way in the eco-luxury travel industry. Focusing on both environmental stewardship and the harmonious use of land, the estate is an example to all of the importance of protecting the natural world to ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy its majesty and bounty. Be sure to give the website a browse for more info on the estate’s incredible luxury offering as well as the latest environmental programmes it is involved in.
