How to care for Clay Cooking Pottery

Traditional clay cooking pottery from different world cultures are made out of terracotta clay which makes them porous. This poracity requires careful seasoning to prevent leaking. The porous quality of terracotta clay makes the traditional pottery more resistant to heat shock, but they are not typically known to last long because they are structurally fragile.

Soos Creek Studio’s clay cooking pottery are high fired and go through a much higher vitrification depth. With proper care, they can last much longer than the traditional pottery, whether you season it or not. Using the clay pot for the first time is enough to season itself. We use a specially formulated clay that can withstand high heat and is particularly resistant to heat shock. We also design the pottery with smooth and round forms without any sharp corners for even heat distribution. You can cook on gas or electric stove tops, but not on induction stove tops. The unglazed nature of the pottery keeps the traditional look and brings out the best performance.

For the longevity of the ceramic cooking pots, there are a few steps to keep in mind.

Recommended ways to minimize heat shock to the pottery:

  • Always place the ingredients or liquid in the pot before turning on the heat.

  • When stir frying, place the oils and foods first, then turn on the heat. On clay pots, food won’t stick to the pan.

  • Since clay pots retain heat longer, turn off the heat and gradually cool the pot on the stove top or place it on a trivet before transfering to the table.

  • Cook on gas or electric stove tops or portable gas tops or barbecue grills .

Not Recommended:

  • Turning on the heat on an empty pot.

  • Don’t add oil to a hot and empty pot.

  • Don’t add liquids to a hot empty pot.

  • Don’t pour cold water in a hot pot, or place a hot pot in the sink or in the refrigerator while it is hot. Let it cool to the touch or place it on a hot pad or trivet and allow it to cool.

  • Induction stove top need a metal sheet under it as the clay doesn’t have sufficient ferro metal to transfer the heat.

Aftercare:

  • Soak in warm water to remove any food stuck to the pan. Use a brush to scrub off any food particles.

  • Hand wash or place it in the dishwasher.

  • Dry thoroughly before storing to avoid mildew. Place the bowl upside down on a drying rack, or place on the stove with low heat to dry. Treat the lid the same way.
