Ed Sheeran is set to pay tribute to a small Scottish town in his latest album after finding solace in the area over the past few years. The Hills of Aberfeldy will feature on his sixth studio album Subtract, which is set to be released on May 5.

The acoustic tune has been inspired by his past trips to the Highland Perthshire town. In 2014 he paid a visit and ended up performing an impromptu gig for regulars at the Breadalbane Arms.

And in 2018, he booked out the nearby Loch Tay Marina for a serene getaway with a group of friends. He even has an Aberfeldy whisky tattoo on his arm, reports the Perthshire Advertiser.

The Galway Girl hitmaker has suffered a difficult year after his wife Cherry was diagnosed with a tumour. Sheeran has also been mourning the death of his close pal Jamal Edwards. Subtract will be his fifth studio album and is the follow-up to 2021's Equals.

He has sold over 150 million albums worldwide. Speaking in 2017, he told the Daily Record he had written a song for Scotland in the style of Galway Gorls. He said: "I wrote a Highland folk song called Aberfeldy that was due to go on this album but didn’t make it.

“It was a bit too folky for this one but it will go on the next one. Or on a film soundtrack. It’s about being on holiday in Aberfeldy." Of his tattoo he added: "You can go to any Scots or Irish bar in the world and they have a bottle of Aberfeldy. I was in a bar in Germany and the barman had it – I showed him the tattoo and he gave me a free shot!"

Aberfeldy is a town of around 2,000 people in the heart of rural Perthshire. It was mentioned by Robert Burns in his poem The Birks Of Aberfeldy.
