Mayan Jaguar Original: Acrylic Razor Etching on Hardwood The jaguar has been a sacred animal in Mesoamerica for more than two thousand years. The Mayan and Aztec priests often used his image on their costumes to enhance their own prestige and power. Usually called 'Jaguar God of the Underworld', he has been assumed to be the 'Night Sun': the shape supposedly taken by the sun (Kinich Ahau) during his nightly journey through the underworld.
