A guide to all the different Harley Quinn movies being developed

There are at least four Harley Quinn movies right now

Harley Quinn

Just how many live-action Harley Quinn movies is Warner Bros. developing right now?

This is the question that got us at Polygon scratching our heads and Googling with frenzy after an interview Margot Robbie gave to MTV. Robbie said she’s been working on a separate, what sounds like a stand-alone Harley Quinn movie. When asked by MTV’s Josh Horowitz if that referred to earlier announced projects involving Harley Quinn, like Gotham City Sirens or the stand-alone Joker and Harley Quinn romance movie, Robbie affirmed it wasn’t.

“I’ve been working on a separate spinoff of Harley for a while now,” Robbie said. “It’s a totally separate one. There’s a lot going on right now and I’m not sure ... I honestly don’t think anyone knows what’s going to be the next thing to happen, but I think everyone’s keen to get Harley back on screen.”

So ... wait. Let’s take a second to think about this. That means we have at least four confirmed movies featuring Harley Quinn: Suicide Squad 2, Gotham City Sirens, the stand-alone Joker and Harley “romantic comedy” and, finally, this mysterious new stand-alone Harley movie.

Like Marvel Studios, Warner Bros. has movies planned through 2020 for its DC superheroes. Between major events, stand-alone movies, the introduction of new characters and even attempting to set up a new division within the DC film universe, it can get confusing. That doesn’t even take into account four Harley Quinn movies.

To make things a little easier, here’s a quick guide to each Harley Quinn movie we know about.

Gotham City Sirens

Warner Bros. announced Gotham City Sirens as one of its DCU movies in December 2016. Details were scarce, but The Hollywood Reporter said it would focus on three of DC’s female baddies — Catwoman, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn. Margot Robbie is the only actress who has signed on to the movie, with Jared Leto rumored to be reprising his role as the Joker. Although the two may appear on screen together — and their relationship will play a part in Harley Quinn’s story — this isn’t the Harley/Joker “romcom.”

Director David Ayer, who chose to work on Gotham City Sirens instead of Suicide Squad 2, confirmed this will be a movie about the three villains, not their romantic partners or other popular male superheroes.

"It's a story about three fantastic women who are trying to find their way in the world, and realize that they have more power together than they do individually,” Ayer told IGN. “I have daughters, and I want to create something that might be able to help them get along in the world a little bit."

Gotham City Sirens doesn’t have a release date.

Suicide Squad 2

Robbie will return to the world of Suicide Squad to reprise her role as Harley Quinn, but that’s about all we know. Rumors suggest that Robbie will star alongside her former cast members, including Leto as the Joker and Will Smith as Deadshot, but there’s no confirmation on anyone’s return besides Robbie’s at this time.

We do, however, know who’s directing the movie. Gavin O’Connor, best known for his directorial work on The Accountant, Warrior and Pride and Glory, will direct the supervillain sequel.

Suicide Squad 2 is set to be released in 2019.

Harley Quinn and Joker “romcom”

Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, co-directors on 2011’s Crazy Stupid Love, will take on the difficult task of trying to turn the Joker and Harley Quinn’s abusive relationship into a romantic comedy.

The Hollywood Reporter published a story in August that said the film will be a “criminal love story,” which one source told the magazine was akin to “an insane and twisted love story. When Harry Met Sally on benzedrine.” The movie is set to be released after Suicide Squad 2, making a 2020 release date likely. Robbie and Leto will reportedly return for the movie.

The Harley/Joker romantic comedy, which doesn’t have a title or synopsis at this point, will fall into the same mainline universe as other DCU movies, including Wonder Woman, Justice League and Suicide Squad 2. That means unlike reported films such as Martin Scorsese’s Joker movie, the events that occur in the Harley/Joker movie will be canonical.

Stand-alone Harley Quinn movie

All of which brings us to this new, stand-alone Harley Quinn movie. As Robbie said in the aforementioned interview above, details on the movie are light and the actress can’t reveal anything more about it at this time.

We can assume this new movie will be released after the other three, but it’s difficult to gauge without anymore specific details. Polygon has reached out to Warner Bros. for more information and will update if that becomes available.
