RTE to air Belturbet bombing appeal

RTE’s Crimecall programme is due to air a special appeal for information into the Belturbet bombing on their monthly crime programme at 9.35pm on Monday night next, December 19.

The appeal will feature a reenactment of the events of that fateful day in December of 1972 when a no-warning bomb exploded on the Main Street of the county Cavan town, killing two teenagers, among them 16-year old Patrick Stanley from Clara, and seriously injuring a dozen others.

A film crew visited Belturbet earlier this week ahead of the Crimecall programme to film a reenactment of the explosion, which will be aired as part of the appeal for information into the tragedy.

The renewed appeal for information comes in the wake of a major review of the Belturbet Bombing which was announced in October. As part of a review a Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the investigation into the bombing and an incident room has been established at Ballyconnell Garda Station.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information in relation to the Belturbet Bombing on December 28, 1972 to contact the incident room at Ballyconnell Garda Station on 049 9525580, the Garda confidential line Free-phone 1800 666 111 or Crimestoppers 1800 250025.
