Plate umpire exits game with bruised hand

SEATTLE -- Plate umpire Scott Barry, who left the Mariners-Royals game after three innings with an injury on Saturday night, is expected to return for Sunday's game.

Barry was struck on the back of the right hand by Yordano Ventura's wild pitch that bounced past catcher Salvador Perez while Dustin Ackley was batting in the Mariners' second inning.

X-rays on Barry were negative. He sustained a bruise and was expected to be umpiring at second base in the series finale on Sunday.

Crew chief Jeff Nelson, umpiring at first base, left at the top of the third inning to change into his protective gear and took over behind the plate. Barry completed the inning before going for X-rays.

That left a three-man crew. Marcus Patillo moved from second base to umpire at first base and Laz Diaz took over the left side of the field.
