What does hdmi arc mean?

Many users and readers who buy a TV find that the words MHL or ARC are often standard on their HDMI ports. MHL is known as video output interface standard for mobile phones, so what is ARC? What does it do? Actually speaking of HDMI ARC, it is a very positive feature, this time we will teach you the correct posture of HDMI ARC function in detail...

HDMI ARC focuses on audio transmission solutions

ARC's full name is Audio Return Channel. ARC is designed to make it easier to install entire digital appliances on wires. Its function is to transmit sound signals. Specifically, on the HDMI interface that supports the ARC, the TV can transmit the audio signals back to the power amplifier or other audio devices with HDMI ARC function through the ARC, thus saving the individual digital output wire.

HDMIARC interface on TV

As we all know, HDMI, as a digital video audio receiving standard, can transmit video and audio at the same time. Of course, with the improvement of HDMI version, its function has been enhanced. ARC is what comes with upgrading to 1.4 in HDMI.

In fact, when HDMI was upgraded to 1.3, people noticed that there was an additional CEC feature in HDMI. The purpose of this feature is to simplify control. When a user has many HDMI devices connected together via a switcher or splitter, if each HDMI device supports CEC, then the remote control of one of the devices can be used to control other devices.

The HDMI CEC feature lets a single remote control control all cec-enabled devices

With HDMI1.4, two more features are added to HDMI, one is HEC and the other is ARC. HEC is a little-used feature that allows HDMI cables to transmit network signals, but most devices don't support this feature. But the ARC feature is so practical that it's supported by many HDMI devices.

Here's a typical ARC application:

Normally, hd set-top boxes (support for digital audio output) to experience 5.1 channels, HDMI amplifier via HDMI connection, the video and digital audio output at the same time to the power amplifier, the amplifier separation of video and digital audio and video signal through the HDMI output to the television, and digital audio channel decoding through the pa 5.1 - this is a very common model of the attachment.

So, if this TV is a smart TV, how can you enjoy 5.1 channel audio when you plug in a usb flash drive and play hd video directly on the TV? According to the traditional way, it must be decoded by connecting the power amplifier to the light/coaxial digital audio outlet on the TV.

If both the TV and the amplifier support HDMI ARC, it will be less complicated. Digital audio will be transmitted back to the amplifier directly through the HDMI cable connecting the TV and the amplifier for 5.1 channels of digital audio decoding.

HDMI ARC application figure 2: the TV receives hd wireless signals for playback, and audio is transmitted back to the HDMI amplifier via the HDMI cable (note that it is from the "HDMI input port" of the TV to the "HDMI output port" of the power amplifier)

For another example: in addition, in the European and American countries, many of high-definition television is through the wireless receiving antenna (surprised), not by other devices, but rather direct access to television, the television without fiber/coaxial audio output interface (have HDMI, but without a TV many digital audio interface), can not be decoded multichannel hd audio signal, using HDMI ARC function comes in handy at this time, on a HDMI input line is reverse to decode the digital audio output to the amplifier.

So, taken together, HDMI ARC is an application-specific feature. Today, smart TV in China is developing very fast. We don't need a set-top box or an Android box to see all kinds of high-definition video programs through the Internet. However, many cheap smart TV in China don't have fiber output interface. So when buying a smart TV, at least make sure it has a fiber optic output port or HDMI ARC to ensure the best sound experience. We also want to stress that HDMI ARC is the "icing on the cake" feature, and we can't put the cart before the horse. Chances are, TVS that don't support digital audio output won't support HDMI ARC.
