So they say where there is a will, there is a way! Throughout the pandemic, University of East London students on practical courses such as engineering, architecture and visual arts have been able to use the campus facilities and studios at least once a week, in a well organised social distanced manner under the Dual Delivery framework and Covid-secure campus rules. We also taught students how to conduct micro scale experiments at home, such as reinforcing soil and sand, using coffee and sugar as substitutes, and turning many a breakfast table into temporary laboratories. We were determined to support students to hold a physical end of year degree show and invite the family and friends to join in to witness their remarkable achievements during what has been a very challenging year. We have to do this in strict accordance with detailed risk assessment and mitigation measures. It’s heart warming to see the students’ wishes become a reality. Massive thanks to all our talented students for playing their significant part in the School’s academic life, and to my fantastic team for the highest professionalism, strength and resilience vividly demonstrated in challenging times.
