The city of Tournus, located on the River Saône, offers visitors its abbey and its remarkable abbey Saint-Philibert church, gem of Romanesque architecture. Around the abbey, picturesque narrow streets lined by old houses can be enjoyed along the walk. Not to be missed also, the visit of the Hôtel-Dieu hospice and its magnificent apothecary shop.
Located halfway between Dijon and Lyon on RN6, enjoying an interchange on the motorway A6 at 800 m from downtown, Tournus stretches on the banks of the Saône between the plain of Bresse and Mountains Macon. Its gently sloping roofs and tiled Roman herald the South of France.
Tournus former Roman castrum, is known as the 6th century, thanks to a shrine dedicated to St Valerian, martyred in the 2nd century. With the arrival of monks from Noirmoutier carrying with them the relics of their patron saint Philibert, the town became an important religious center from the 9th century. Wonderfully preserved, Abbey dominates the Burgundian city that stretches along the right bank of the Saone. Tournus became a stop for boaters that intersect along the Saône.
