Tirzepatide

Tirzepatide combines the actions of two hormones: glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). It is primarily used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

GLP-1 and GIP are naturally occurring hormones produced in the gut that play important roles in regulating blood sugar levels, insulin secretion, and appetite.By activating receptors, tirzepatide enhances insulin secretion and helps to lower blood glucose levels. It also reduces the release of glucagon, a hormone that raises blood sugar levels.
Tirzepatide has the additional benefit of slowing down gastric emptying, which can help regulate digestion and contribute to feelings of fullness and reduced appetite. This effect can be helpful for individuals who are aiming to manage their weight.

FAQs

What is Mounjaro®?

Mounjaro® is a prescription medication used to improve blood sugar (glucose) control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is a once-weekly injection that works by increasing the amount of two hormones, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), in the body. These hormones help to control blood sugar levels by:

- Increasing insulin production, which helps to move glucose into cells for energy.
- Reducing glucagon production, which helps to prevent the liver from releasing too much glucose into the bloodstream.
- Slowing down the emptying of the stomach, which helps to prevent blood sugar spikes after meals.

Mounjaro® has been shown to be effective in lowering blood sugar levels and reducing the risk of serious complications of type 2 diabetes, such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease. It has also been shown to be effective in helping people lose weight.

How much weight can I lose on Mounjaro®?

The amount of weight you can lose on Mounjaro® can vary depending on individual factors, such as your starting weight, diet, and exercise habits. However, clinical trials have shown that Mounjaro® can lead to significant weight loss.

In one clinical trial, participants who took Mounjaro® lost an average of 20% of their starting body weight over 72 weeks. This is compared to an average weight loss of 2.4% for participants who took a placebo.

In another clinical trial, participants who took the maximum dose of Mounjaro® lost an average of 26.6% of their starting body weight over 84 weeks. This is compared to an average weight loss of 1.7% for participants who took a placebo.

It is important to note that Mounjaro® is not a magic bullet for weight loss. You will still need to make healthy lifestyle changes, such as eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly, in order to achieve and maintain your weight loss goals.

How much does Mounjaro® cost?

We navigate insurance on your behalf and are able to work with the vast majority of commercial/employer insurance plans in order to get cost-effective access for your GLP-1 medication and coverage for your labs. Lab copays vary by plan.

GLP-1s for most members with commercial insurance is typically around $25 per month after any deductible is met but, at times, and depending on plan, can be higher. Federal payors do not cover GLP-1 treatment at this time. The cost of the Sunrise program is not covered by insurance, however it is HSA/FSA eligible.

What are the potential side effects?

The medications that are a part of our platform are called GLP-1s, and are clinically-tested, stimulant-free, and non-habit forming. Side effects are extremely rare, and most individuals who take a GLP-1 do not experience any. For those who do, nausea is the most common, and this typically resolves over the first few weeks of being on the medication.

If you do experience any side effects, you’ll be able to reach out to your Medical Team directly for support. In the most recent clinical trials, less than 5% of people discontinued GLP-1 medications because of side effects.
