Richard! It's time to tune in - Hyacinth is back on TV: Russell Howard's sister set to play Mrs Bucket in one-off prequel to Keeping Up Appearances

Lay out the best china — actress Kerry Howard is to play Britain’s biggest snob in a one-off prequel to Keeping Up Appearances.

Howard, 24, will portray a young incarnation of the middle-class busybody Hyacinth Bucket, played by Patricia Routledge from 1990 to 1995.

The episode, Young Hyacinth, is set in the 1950s and written by the show’s creator Roy Clarke.

In it, Bucket is a maid and fans will discover what turned her into such a social climber.

Keeping Up Appearances chronicled Hyacinth’s farcical attempts to portray herself and her long-suffering husband Richard (Clive Swift) as the epitome of middle-class suburban respectability, referring to herself as ‘the lady of the house’ and insisting their surname be pronounced ‘Bouquet’ rather than Bucket.

However, her endeavours are often undermined by the antics of her ‘common’ relatives.

The show ran for 44 episodes over five series and last month, BBC Worldwide revealed it was its most exported show ever. But Routledge (pictured in character, left) is unimpressed by the plans. Now 87, she told an interviewer: ‘They must be desperate. Remind me to switch off, please.’
