Garrett Hedlund gushes that his son with ex Emma Roberts is his 'best friend for life': 'We just have the greatest time'

Garrett Hedlund couldn't help but share his love for his young son Rhodes in a new interview published Thursday.

The 38-year-old actor sounded over the moon as he described the nearly two-year-old boy, whom he shares with his ex Emma Roberts, as his 'best friend,' according to Page Six.

'I’ve got a best friend for life with this little man,' he said on Wednesday at the premiere of his new series Tulsa King in New York City. 'He never ceases to amaze me. We just have the greatest time.'

Garrett was promoting his new series, which stars Sylvester Stallone in his scripted television debut.

The Rambo star plays a New York–based mafia captain who is released from prison after 25 years, only for his superiors to order him to move to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to set up a new criminal enterprise.

Garrett appears opposite Stallone in the crime series, which is from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan.

While spending time with his son Rhodes, the Triple Frontier actor got a chance to introduce his young son to Stallone, who gamely posed for a photo later posted to Garrett's Instagram.

Stalone beams while holding his hand up in a fist like Rocky, while Garrett also raised a fist and held little Rhodes in his other arm.

'Rocky Rhodes,' he sweetly captioned the photo, which he shared in August.

'I’ll treasure the picture I have with him and my son,' Garrett said at the premiere. 'Not that there won’t be many more, but how many nearly 2-year-old boys [have] his picture with Rocky?'

Although plenty of stars would have been nervous working with a legend like Stallone, Hedlund said he wasn't worried about collaborating.

'He’s always been wonderful. He’s always been a pal,' he said, revealing that they met prior to working on the show. 'We met through trainer Gunnar Peterson. I feel like this was a long time coming to share the screen with him.'

Garrett even joked that he would sometimes wrangle Sylvester on set when other people were too nervous to disturb him.

'If it ever took Sly a little time to come out of his trailer, I just said to the producer and director, ‘I know you guys are scared to go get him, but I can do it.'

Garrett was first linked to his ex Emma in March of 2019, when they were seen showing off some PDA shortly after she split with her on–off boyfriend Evan Peters, who had costarred with her on American Horror Story.

In June 2020, it was revealed that she was expecting her first child with Garrett, and the lovebirds confirmed the news with a jubilant maternity photoshoot shared to social media, in which Emma revealed she was expecting a boy.

She welcomed Rhodes in January 2021, and the two appeared to continue their relationship in a more low-key manner out of the spotlight.

But they were reported to have broken up in January 2022, reportedly after growing apart due to Garrett's busy work schedule, which kept him away from Emma and his son.

Later that month, Hedlund was arrested for public intoxication in Franlkin County, Tennessee.

The actor was also arrested for driving under the influence in 2020, and in January of this year, a family sued him for allegedly passing out while behind the wheel and hitting their car during that earlier incident.

He had been placed on three years of probation after the DUI, but it is unclear if that affected his public intoxication arrest from January.
