Mission Bay

Imagine a long, golden beachfront with million-dollar views of an ancient volcanic island. That’s exactly what this super-beachy suburb is known for. Mission Bay is where you can park up with an umbrella, Frisbee or picnic blanket for a fabulous day in the sun.  

Head here in the wee hours to find joggers and early birds getting their caffeine fix. At the Promenade, there are eateries and cafés aplenty that swell with the post-beach crowd. Stay a while to watch the giant fountain at Selwyn Reserve dance, spritz the air and even light up at night.  

Make the most of the shimmering coastline by kayak and stand-up paddleboard, which you can hire from Mission Bay Watersports. Taking the kids to SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton's Aquarium is another must-do. Transport your family to an underwater world with thousands of marine animals and more than 30 exhibits that include sharks, stingrays and penguins. 

From the beach, mosey on over to hip eateries, bustling bistros and even rooftop bars (looking at you, Good George). Dig into spicy fish tacos or a woodfired pizza; for a bit of Grease-esque nostalgia, sip on milkshakes at the Bald Eagle Diner. 

You can easily stroll over to St Heliers or Ōrākei along Tāmaki Drive, a popular coastal boulevard. Spread out a picnic at Michael Savage Memorial Park, a hilltop public space at Ōrākei’s historic Bastion Point. For something more active, channel your inner Californian by cruising the waterfront on bike or rollerblade – try Ferg’s Kayaks for a day hire.  

Even when the sun isn’t shining, Mission Bay has got you covered. Enjoy the old-timey charm of an arthouse cinema at The Berkeley, one of Auckland’s oldest theatres situated (of course) a stone’s throw from the sea.
