A postcard from Italy: Lake Como

Look, the mist is clearing. And it’s love at first sight…

Lake Como is paradise on earth. Didn’t someone call it 'the looking glass of Venus'?

Nestled in a glorious valley at the foot of the snow-capped Alps, its breathtaking scenery and unbelievable natural beauty have been celebrated since Roman times.

Long before George Clooney bought his piece of heaven, Lago Di Como has been a mecca for artists and aristocrats. Byron, Shelley and Stendhal have stayed here. Liszt, Bellini, and Puccini all visited. And Rossini wrote his opera Tancredi here in the 16th century Villa Pliniana.

The Villa D'Este was once a female convent, and countless famous couples have lived their love story here, including Maria Callas and Aristotle Onassis.

There’s the Villa Fontanelle, owned by the late Versace. Is that Madonna in the window?

And the Villa del Balbianello, where they filmed Casino Royale with Daniel Craig.

And a different kind of eye candy: the Villa Carlotta, one of my favourites. The lakeside gardens are a miracle – fountains and sculptures, and that prolific riot of rhododendrons and azaleas.
