19th Century Samoa Tapa Cloth
About the Item
Antique 19th century Samoa Siapo ( `tapa cloth ) made from the inner bark of a mulberry tree / free hand paint decorated ( Siapo Mamanu ) with the natural dyes from plants, trees and clays. This large tapa cloth was descended in the family of William L. Buchanan ( 1852-1909 ) Diplomat of the Americas / Chief of the Four Divisions at the Chicago World's Colombian Exposition in 1893 and in the following eight years of Theodore Roosevelt's presidency the administrations trouble shooting diplomat in Latin America. It has not seen the light of day in many years. First time for sale. Exceptionally beautiful rich hand decorated natural dye colors and bold graphic geometric design.
