Meet the Piglet Squid! With his Curly Hair and the Huge Smile on his face, I hope he Will Make Your Day!

Today I really needed to smile, so I take this opportunity and I am happy to be posting about the ‘ever smiling’ sweet, cute, honey bunny piglet squid – hoping to transfer good vibes over to all of you who read this.

Piglet Squid

Banded Piglet Squid CC0

So, I proudly introduce to you the banded piglet squid (Helicocranchia pfefferi) which looks like a mixture of (guess what) a small pig and a squid!

This 10 cm (3.9 in) small squid is a mesopelaegic1 creature, descending to depths of between 100 and 1000m as it matures.

Appearance

It is dark in this zone and our squid has photophore2 eyeballs so that he sees where he's going.
Its tentacles are long and strong, while its arms are very short. Its head is small with a ventral side which is covered by a large funnel. The colour of this squid is light, brown or orange.
Check out this photo too!
We have used to see that most of the squid smile upside down, so it is a big difference to see this ‘happy squid’ to swim the other way round.

Mating Behaviour

I have found the life cycle information very interesting and I am sharing it with you, however this refers to squids in general.
This piglet squid has not been very much observed yet, due to the fact that it leaves in deep waters .

The squids start spawning in groups and after selecting their partner, they mate for about 15 seconds. They have a very short life span so they usually die shortly after mating. Thousands of eggs are produced and the new born squids feed for themselves right after their birth.
