“Howdy, Campers! Rise and shine! And don’t forget your booties, ’cause it’s coooooold out there today!”

I thought Bill Murray was a genius before it was cool to thing Bill Murray was a genius.  Without a doubt, my favorite of his movies is Groundhog Day.  I have probably watched it 100 times in my 34 years.  One of my favorites.  Incidentally, if you’ve never seen it, or if you’ve seen it a million times but want to watch it again, it’s going to be on a whole bunch of times on February 2nd, the actual Groundhog Day on Comedy Central.

My third baby was born on Groundhog Day as well, so it is a special day around here.

I like to play up Groundhog day with my kids. I remember really genuinely thinking “what the groundhog says, goes.”  I remember rushing home from school on the big day to ask my mom if the groundhog had seen his shadow and if there were going to be six more weeks of winter.

Anyway, I saw the idea for these adorable little Groundhog Day donuts over on Tablespoon.com and knew immediately that I was going to need to make these for my kids this year.  5 minutes, I promise! I bought store bought chocolate cake donuts, some Milano Cookies, and a little thing of oreos.  I had everything else in my pantry, (sliced almonds, sprinkles, and chocolate chips.)  You could use m&ms or anything really.  Get creative!

I can’t wait for my kids to wake up to these.  They’re going to love them.

Ingredients:
Chocolate cake donuts (store bought or homemade)
Pepperidge Farm Milano Cookies
chocolate chips (about half a cup)
Oreo cookies
Sliced almonds for ears
Heart shaped or other shaped white sprinkles
Groundhog day sign (made out of Popsicle sticks and paper)

Directions:
Place your donut in the center of your plate.  Pick out a chocolate chip to use for a nose, two sliced almonds for ears, and a white sprinkle for the teeth.

Melt the chocolate chips in a bowl in the microwave.  Heat for 30 seconds at a time stirring in between.  Be careful not to burn the chocolate.

Remove bowl from microwave, and Dip the ends of the almonds into the melted chocolate.  Stick them to the edges of the cookie like ears. Hold for just a couple of seconds on each one and they will stick.

Using a toothpick or the tip of a small knife, dip into the chocolate and “paint” chocolate eyes onto the cookies.  Stick on a chocolate chip for the nose and sprinkle tooth (gluing on with the melted chocolate)

Crush oreos with a rolling pin to make “dirt.”  Spread some melted chocolate onto the chocolate part of your donut and sprinkle with oreo cookie dirt.

Stick sign into the side of the donut.  Enjoy!
