The French have two words for a "river"; a substantial river that flows to the sea is known as "une fleuve", and all other rivers - including all rivers that are tributaries of other rivers - are known of as "une rivière".
Saône river is 431 km (268 mi) long and its source rising in the rising at Vioménil near Épinal, E Franc. It’s flow SW to Chalon-sur-Saône than via Tournus cruise over through the wine region of Burgundy to join the Rhône River in the end at Lyon. Navigable section/part of the river is 356km (221mi) long, and is linked to other river systems by canals.
Rhône River is 813km (505mi) long, originates in Switzerland, from the Rhône glacier near the Grimsel Pass, NE Valais and enters Lake Geneva at Montreux. From the Lake Geneva, it flows to southwest into France, to join by the Saône River at Lyon. The Rhone River (323km/201mi navigable and canalized) from Lyon, run through the Rhône Valley between well-tended vineyards lines into the colorful Provence. At Arise the two arms of the river, the Grand and Petit Rhône forms the Camargue delta. Than as the only major European river flowing directly to the Mediterranean Sea, finished its run and discharge at Port St Louis. The Mistral is a strong, cold wind from north or northwest, that blows through the valleys of the Rhone and Provence to the Mediterranean. The Mistral is one of the key weather-makers of this charming part of French. Usually blows in winter or spring and strongest in the transition between the two seasons. It makes its presence known year round, but unlike in winter, it’s very welcomed in the summer when you need to cool off. Almost every agricultural enterprises located in Rhone Valley requires some protections against the sometimes violent mistral winds. Today, the Rhône Valley continues its prominence as one of the greatest wine regions on Earth, with more than 6,000 wine growing properties, partly due to the Mistral winds. In 1948, the government started construction on a series of locks and canal cuts, to improve navigation and generate electricity, with locks raising boats up to 23 meters / 75 ft. Provence has an amazing natural heritage, Not only has sandy beaches, it also has high, snowy Alpine peaks even in summer and they are less than 100 km apart. The medieval period saw the establishment of cathedral towns, abbeys and a great wine-making tradition throughout the Rhône Valley region that exists to this day Historically this region has one of the earliest sites of human habitation known in Europe and one of the finest collections of Roman remains. In the medieval time by Pope Clement V, Avignon becomes the seat of the Catholic popes for 68 years long- City of the Popes.
