Muriwai Beach: A Rugged West Coast Beach

We are regular visitors to Muriwai Beach.

It has sparkling black sand, wild surf, a rugged coastline and it just seems to go on and on for ever. We love this place!

Location: Muriwai Regional Park

Driving on Muriwai Beach: apply for a permit

Even on a winter’s day it is beautiful. And how lucky were we to have such a fine, cold day where the winters sun appeared to sparkle on the water. We walked, watched the surfers, and enjoyed breathing in that salty fresh air… a lovely walk in nature.

At Muriwai’s southern end, Otakamiro Point is the site of one of NZ’s few mainland gannet (takapu) breeding colonies. We think the gannets might be starting to arrive from Australia and surely the white-fronted terns would be here by now but unfortunately the track to the colony was closed today. Not sure why, but it could be because Muriwai was badly affected by Cyclone Gabrielle. Evidence of the devastation still abounds. See recent updates here.

For this reason, I have use photos of the gannet colony which were taken some time ago during previous visits.
