About | Whangarei Falls

Whangarei Falls is one of the must-dos of Whangarei. The falls are 26m high and surrounded by native bush at the bottom, providing the opportunity to walk further if you’re keen. There’s plenty of parking and you’ll see the lovely parking volunteers out during peak season helping visitors find a parking spot.

There are a few picnic tables so grab some food and drinks on the way – this is the perfect spot to listen to the falling water, relax and enjoy your lunch. Toilets are up by the parking.

View the waterfalls from the top on the two viewing platforms, it’s then a ten-minute walk down on a well-formed track to the bottom of the falls. There are also longer walks you can take from here.

exploring waterfalls

The thing we loved best about this place was of course, exploration and adventure. What I didn’t know was that you can walk along the rocks and try get as close as you can to the bottom of the falls. We saw a guy do it, while his friends stayed back, cheered him on and took photos.

We knew we had to do it for ourselves too. So I set out, my two little kiddies in tow. There were lots of cool photo opportunities along the way.

A few meters before the falls it got really mossy and slippery. As we hung onto the rocks tightly and inched ourselves slowly closer, it felt amazing being right there, so close to the falls that we were getting wet. It was an amazing experience and one I was glad to be able to spend with my kids.

Ash and I decided to do the other side as well together and I loved spending that one on one time with him doing something that was pretty cool.

We really loved exploring the Whangarei Falls and it was the perfect way to unwind the boys before bedtime.
