#4 Rose’s Turn- Laryngitis

Chris Colfer’s Kurt channels his frustration, his hurt, and his insecurity into this powerhouse of a number that smacks the audience in the face with emotional intensity.  Rose’s Turn is pure teen angst, but it takes that angst totally seriously.  Kurt’s feelings about his relationship with his dad are portrayed as raw, heart-wrenching, and respected as genuine and legitimate.  On top of the very common teenage experience of feeling like you’ve disappointed or failed to measure up to what your parents want, Rose’s Turn has an added layer of poignancy as Kurt struggles to reconcile his sexuality, definitions of gender, and what he perceives as his dad’s rejection of him in favor of a more appealing son-figure.
