deirdre nelson
I am a maker creating textiles which explore humour, place and social history. I partner traditional techniques with contemporary processes such as digital print in creating work not only to be exhibited but on artist residencies, within education and community projects. Resulting works cross over art, design and craft. I enable the communities I work with to explore social and environmental issues through making. I also work to commission for arts and healthcare organisations. Collaborating with creatives such as architects, musicians and writers allows me to create and produce diverse projects.

Biography: Deirdre Nelson is an Irish artist/designer based in Glasgow. Nelson studied textiles at Glasgow School of Art 1992 and a M. Philosophy in 1996 She has exhibited internationally and nationally and undertaken residencies both in the UK and Australia.including: The Kildas Glasgow School of Art + touring 2016; Designed with heart St Etienne Design Bienalle 201; Between the Line . Harbourfront Arts Centre. Toronto .Canada. 2013; White. La Porte Peinte Centre for the arts. Noyens Sur Surein France 2011; Close at Hand Owens Gallery. Sackville. NB . Canada 2011; Unexpected Guests. Homes of Yesteryear, Design of Today” Poldi Museum. Milan 2010. Commissions include: Orchard View continuing Care facility2016; Edinburgh Royal infirmary 2009; Shetland Museum and Archives 2006.
Residencies include; Walthamstow Wetlands 2017/8, Textilsetur Islands, Iceland 2018; Caterans Common Alyth Scotland 2017; Platform Arts. Easterhouse Glasgow 2016; Timespan Helmsdale Scotland 2015; Wigtown Book Festival 2010; Cove Park 2010; IASKA Western Australia 2008; Curtin university 2007.
Collaborators include writer Ruth Little, design collective Lateral north,, designer Neil Maguire,musician Inge Thomson, vocalist Hanna Tuulikki, poet Tawona Sithole, Sampler Culture Clash with David Littler and Jason Singh, filmmaker Matt Hulse , writer Christos Tsiolkas. spinner Hazel Raee and designer Helen Kalmijn.
