It’s Day 41 and I couldn’t be more excited about today’s artist!  Excited and extremely intimidated.  She’s one of my current favorite artists.  In a strange way, her painting wasn’t as difficult as even some of the minimalist painters I’ve done because it’s kind of right up my alley.  My version is (of course) much simpler and less in depth than her work, but I think I captured her style all right.  I also learned about the art movement “lowbrow” while researching more about her.  Interesting!  Let’s celebrate beautiful Camille Rose Garcia!

Camille Rose Garcia (born November 18, 1970) is a Los Angeles-based lowbrow artist. She produces paintings, prints and sculpture in a gothic, “creepy” cartoon style. She cites as influences Walt Disney and Philip K. Dick.

Garcia’s parents met in music school. Her father was a film producer and anti-

Vietnam activist, and her mother was a muralist from Northern California. Garcia’s parents had divorced when she was young and her mother raised her and her sister, within close proximity to Disneyland.

Camille Rose Garcia received her Master of Fine Arts degree at University of California at Davis in 1994 and her BFA from Otis College of Art and Design in 1992. Six years of art school left her disillusioned and bitter, so she decided to move back home on Huntington Beach, California, and started a band, The Real Minx.

Garcia’s work has appeared in Modern Painters, Juxtapoz, Rolling Stone, Flaunt, and Blab! magazines.  She also contributed work to ohGr’s second album, SunnyPsyOp.

She has published three books, The Saddest Place on Earth, (Last Gasp, 2006),

The Magic Bottle: A BLAB! Storybook, (Fantagraphics, 2006) and Tragic Kingdom (Last Gasp, 2007) .

She illustrated a version of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, in 2010. “The original illustrations by John Tenniel have always been

some of my favorites, ” said Garcia in a recent interview when asked about the book. “I have three copies of the book here because I collect children’s stories. That’s one of my favorite stories because it’s actually a real dark story. She falls down the hole and no one is really nice to her at all. Pretty much every character she encounters, they’re not really on her side. So re-reading it I realized I could do a little bit darker of an interpretation than the original illustrations.”

Her work also appears in the permanent collections of LACMA and the San Jose Museum of Art.

Camille Rose Garcia was born in 1970 in Los Angeles, California, The child of a Mexican activist filmmaker father and a muralist/painter mother, she apprenticed at age 14 working on murals with her mother while growing up in the generic suburbs of Orange County, visiting Disneyland and going to punk shows with the other disenchanted youth of that era.

Garcia’s layered, broken narrative paintings of wasteland fairy tales are influenced by William Burroughs’ cut-up writings and surrealist film, as well as vintage Disney and Fleischer cartoons, acting as critical commentaries on the failures of capitalist utopias, blending nostalgic pop culture references with a satirical slant on modern society.

Her work has been displayed internationally and featured in numerous magazines including Juxtapoz, Rolling Stone, and Modern

Painter, and is included in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum as well as the San Jose Museum of Art, which held a retrospective of her work, Tragic Kingdom,in 2007.

On November 2nd 2013, Garcia was part of a four woman show in Los Angeles called “Black Moon” with fellow female artists, Jessicka Addams, Elizabeth McGrath and Marion Peck.

I started out with doing a watercolor wash for the background.  I love doing

these washes for the backgrounds for paintings.  The hard part was creating the characters I wanted to feature.  It all kind of came together though.  I’m happy with my tribute piece.  I’m calling it the “poor man’s” Camille Rose Garcia tribute.  Haha.  If I had more time to paint this piece I would’ve loved to continue adding wonderful details like she does.  She’s amazing and I hope I honored her well.  See you tomorrow…Day 42…!  xoxo, Linda
