Chocolate cake layers: for this Oreo cake recipe I went for a moist chocolate cake, which is not made with butter but with oil instead. This makes the cake batter very moist and then I added pieces of Oreo for a little crunch, this is definitely an easy Death Star cake recipe.

Oreo cream cheese frosting: this refreshing cream cheese frosting with Oreos is perfect for this Galaxy chocolate cake recipe because it is super delicious, not too sweet and just perfect. Simply whip up the heavy cream until stiff, separately mix the cream cheese with sugar and fold in the whipped cream. Add gelatin or a vegan variant according to package instructions and then fold in the crushed Oreo pieces. This Star Wars cake recipe is very easy to make and so incredibly delicious. The Oreo frosting goes quite well with the space cake decoration, as it has a gray tone and therefore goes well with the galaxy cake. Let’s go on to the easy Star Wars cake decorations.

Buttercream Galaxy Cake Recipe

I’m showing you how to make a Star Wars Cake design with Swiss Meringue Buttercream to be able to easily make an easy galaxy themed cake yourself. For this we need strong food colorings in black, pink, violet and blue. How to make a galaxy cake? I divided the buttercream into four parts and colored each part with the respective color. The Oreo cake is then covered with the pink, purple and blue buttercream, creating a colorful pattern. Then smooth the frosting a bit with a cake smoother, but do not smudge the frostings too much, then edible Star Wars cake.

Now the black buttercream comes into play, cover the cake almost completely with black buttercream, but leave a few spots free, because when the black buttercream is spread with the cake smoother it’ll cover those areas too. Creating this Star Wars Death Star cake decoration is so easy. Now heat up the cake smoother in hot water, dry it and smooth out the buttercream, now individual spots of the colored buttercream will shine through the black buttercream which creates this universe look for galaxy cake ideas.

How to make Death Star Cake

I made this simple Death Star cake topper myself and I’m showing you here how to make a Death Star cake easy. I ordered the 3D Death Star cake mold here, actually it’s a Death Star ice cube mold, but it works perfectly for making a chocolate Death Star. Melt the dark chocolate and fill into the hole of the mold, slowly turn the death star mold around to fill everything with chocolate and then simply let it dry. It is best to cool before releasing the mold. That’s how easy it is to make the Star Wars edible cake topper once knowing the individual steps.

Star Wars Edible Cake Topper

There are many Death Star cake ideas, but for this Death Star cake tutorial, I wanted the Death Star to shoot on the cake, therefore I heated up a metal straw in hot water and drilled a hole in the chocolate Death Star. I then covered the metal straw with a green paper straw to mimic the Death Star beam. The perfect may the force be with you cake topper.

  • 1 tbsp vanilla (sugar)
  • 300g (1 2/3 cup) cream cheese
  • 30g (3 tbsp) sugar
  • 150g (1 1/2 cups) Oreos

Swiss Meringue Buttercream

  • 150g (5) egg whites
  • 210g (1 cup) sugar
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 400g (2 3/4 cup) butter, (room temperature)
  • black, pink, violett, blue food colorings

Decorations

  • 275g (2 cups) dark chocolate
  • 200g (1 1/4 cups) white chocolate
  • green & metal straw
  • white & grey sugar pearls and sprinkles
  • bit of cornstarch

Method

Chocolate Oreo Cake

  • Whip eggs, sugar and salt shortly until fluffy. Mix together flour, cocoa powder and baking powder and add to the egg mix together with milk and oil. Crush the Oreos and fold intot he cake batter. Spread out the cake batter in 17cm / 6.5 inch diameter baking pans lined with parchment paper. Bake at 160°C / 320°F for approx. 25 minutes. Take out and let cool completely cool down. Before stacking the cake, it’s helpful to wrap the cake layers in cling film and cool them, this will make them firm and easier to assemble.

Oreo Cream Cheese Frosting

  • In a fat-free bowl (wipe out the bowl and whisk with vinegar) whip up the heavy cream together with cream cheese, sugar and vanilla until stiff. Crush the Oreos and fold in. Cool until the frosting becomes firm, mix shortly before using.

Swiss Meringue Buttercream

  • In a fat-free bowl (wipe out the bowl and whisk with vinegar) add the egg whites, sugar and salt. Place over a saucepan, which is half filled with boiling water. Let the bowl be warmed by it and continuously whisk the egg whites until all the sugar dissolves and you cannot feel any sugar crystals between your fingers, it should have a frothy texture. Whip the egg whites on high speed with a standing mixer until it is room temperature and perfectly whipped meringue. This can take up to 10 minutes, I’m sometimes putting cool packs on the sides of the bowl to shorten the cool down time. Once it is room temperature add the butter spoon by spoon. Before using it, let it come down to room temperature. Stir it with a whisk and it’s ready to use.

Assembly

  • To assemble the cake, first take one cake layer and spread 1/3 of the Oreo cream cheese frosting on it. Repeat this step once again. Then spread the remaining frosting around the cake and cool.

Decoration

  • Divide the buttercream into four parts and color those with black, pink, purple and blue food coloring. Spread the pink, violet and blue buttercream onto the cake at certain points to create a colorful pattern. Then slightly smooth the frosting with a cake smoother, but do not smudge the creams too much. Cool the cake well.

Now cover the cake almost entirely with black buttercream, but leave a few empty spots. Heat the cake smoother in hot water, dry and smooth out the buttercream. Now some of the colored buttercream will shine through, creating the galaxy look. Decorate with white sugar pearls.

Galaxy Chocolate Bark

  • Carefully melt 2/3 of dark chocolate and color it black. Carefully melt the white chocolate and color it in purple and blue, leaving some of the white chocolate uncolored. Spread the dark chocolate on a piece of parchment baking and then spread the white and colored chocolates on it in stripes and distribute in wavy pattern using a cake smoother. To achieve the galaxy look, spread a little more of one color here and there and spread it with the cake smoother. Finally sprinkle white sugar pearls and gray sprinkles.

Chocolate Death Star

  • Carefully melt the remaining 1/3 of dark chocolate and pour into the Death Star mold. Move slowly in all directions and let it dry. Chill the Death Star for an hour before releasing the mold. Heat a metal straw in hot water and poke a hole in the Death Star. Cover the metal straw with a green paper straw and then put it into the cake.
