Harbour station opened in 1862. The main ferry service was to Larne in Northern Ireland, providing the shortest crossing from Scotland. This route was switched to Belfast in 1995. The Stranraer ferry ceased to run in November 2011

'In 1930 Freeman Wills Crofts, a former engineer .. and a popular author of detective fiction [He also wrote @death of a Train], wrote Sir John Magill's Last Journey. It was partly set on the sleeper from London to Stranraer with much of the action based around Larne. It centred on the murder of .. a retired Northern Irish MP. ..'
