Margot Robbie talks about passing Harley Quinn to other actors

Could Margot Robbie’s time as Harley Quinn be coming to an end? It certainly seems that she may be ready to say goodbye to the Clown Princess of Crime.

In a new profile in Variety that focuses on her LuckyChap Entertainment production company, Robbie was asked “Are you hanging up Harley’s bat now that Lady Gaga is playing the character in the upcoming Joker: Folie à Deux?”

“I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters. That was always the dream for her,” replied Robbie. She went on to add, “Harley’s so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, “What are they going to do with her?” The options are endless.”

Robbie has played the role three times thus far: Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, and The Suicide Squad. She has stated previously that she would be willing to return to the role, but with the change from the DCEU to the DCU, it would be a logical point for her to step away from the role.

Before becoming co-CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn – who directed Robbie in The Suicide Squad – had confirmed via social media that the actor would return to the role at some future point. A lot has changed since that time, including an entire cinematic universe. Gunn is bringing some of the actors over the old DCEU to the new DCU such as John Cena as Peacemaker and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. If those plans include Robbie, however, remains unclear.

Robbie had a huge success in 2023 with Barbie, and it would be understandable if that changed some of her plans going forward.
