Boîte-en-valise (Box in a Valise) Artist: Marcel Duchamp (American, born France, 1887–1968)

1948

Prints and Drawings

Like his painting Tu m’ of 1918, Marcel Duchamp’s Box in a Valise, begun in 1941, was conceived as a summation of his career to date. The artist arranged sixty-nine meticulously crafted miniature reproductions of his major works from before 1941 in an elaborate leather suitcase, or “portable museum,” as he described it. Each of the twenty-four editions of this work also included one original: Katherine Dreier’s Valise, for example, contained a drawing of the Knights of the Société Anonyme logo. Other works included in the Valise were Duchamp’s Readymade sculpture Fountain (1917), which generated controversy among the Society of Independent Artists, and his “large glass,” The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (1915–23), which was first exhibited in the 1926 Brooklyn International Exhibition and remained in Dreier’s possession until her death.
