Alan Rogers Review of Château de l’Epervière
Castel Camping Château de l’Epervière is a popular high-quality site peacefully situated on the wooded grounds of a 16th-century château close to the A6 and near the village of Gigny-sur-Saône. It is a beautiful site surrounded by the vineyards of Southern Burgundy. Access to the site is good, and English is spoken at reception. Upon arrival, you will be impressed by the building and its surroundings, and as you drive down by the fishing lake over a long bridge to your pitch, you see the extent of the Chateau’s grounds.
There are 160 pitches arranged over two areas separated by a small fishing lake. All have 10A electricity, some are on hard standing, and 96 are fully serviced. Pitches are large and well-spaced, some with shade, others open; specify your requirements when checking in. There are modern facilities around the site, but the pool, shop, cycle hire, and restaurant and wine-tasting events are all within the confines of the Chateau.
This is a spacious site, and you will certainly get your steps in if you are pitched at the far end. This site is able to accommodate the largest of Motorhomes with ease. Reception is housed in the old stables and outbuildings, and you will find the three pools, cycle hire, shop, free wi-fi and laundry facilities within this area. The bar and restaurant are in the courtyard of the Chateau, and the restaurant also offers a full takeaway service; whether dining in or out, it does offer a unique experience. This is a great destination site or an ideal stopover between Dijon and Lyon.
Gert-Jan and his team enthusiastically organise many activities, mainly for younger children. but there are wine tastings available in the cellars of the château from mid-May to mid-September. Here, you are in the Maconnais and Châlonnaise wine regions, so don't miss the opportunity to arrange some visits to the local caves to sample their wines. 500 yards away is the river Saône, which has a brand new cycle path running along to go for a pleasant, relaxing cycle ride.
