What's in a name?
Very often the first piece of information we have about a person is their name. It’s often the first thing you learn about someone and we form judgments about people very rapidly. And those judgments accumulate, so the first piece of information is especially important. It can lean you in a positive direction or a negative direction. And those first impressions can set the stage for future interactions.
Task: You will write your name on a triangle piece of paper. Be sure to fill the design, touching all sides. Don't have too much empty space. This triangle segment will be traced onto a square piece of paper. You will trace and flip the design to create your very own tessellation.

Tapa Cloth
Tapa cloth (or simply tapa) is a barkcloth made in the islands of the Pacific Ocean, primarily in Tonga, Samoa and Fiji, but as far afield as Niue, Cook Islands, Futuna, Solomon Islands, Java, New Zealand, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea (particularly in Oro Province around Tufi) and Hawaii (where it is called kapa). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tapa_cloth
Bark cloth, or tapa, is not a woven material, but made from bark that has been softened through a process of soaking and beating. The inner bark is taken from several types of trees or shrubs, often mulberry and fig, and designs are applied with paints and vegetable dyes of light brown, red, and black. Bark cloth is manufactured for everyday needs such as room dividers, clothing, and floor mats, as well as ceremonial uses in weddings and funerals. natural-history.uoregon.edu/collections/web-galleries/tapa-cloth-collection/tapa-cloth-image-index
FORM, FUNCTION - IDENTITY
Select 4 designs to draw in your book. You may like to draw a grid first but pay close attention to the shape of your chosen design. Try to show variations of styles and patterns.
Each design has a meaning that will create a narrative or a story, just like a graphic novel.
Who we are!
Exploring the contemporary art work of Fatu Feu'u.
Fatu Akelei Feu'u, ONZM (Born 1946) is a noted Samoan painter.
Feu'u grew up in the village of Poutasi in the district of Falealili in Samoa.
Feu'u emigrated to New Zealand in 1966. He has established a reputation as the elder statesman of Pacific art in New Zealand.[1] Feu'u has been an exhibiting artist since the early 1980s and became a full-time artist in 1988.
Polynesian influences
Feu'u's work is inspired by Polynesian art forms such as siapo (tapa cloth), tatau (tattoo), weaving, carving and ceremonial mask making.[5] In these forms he uses a rich lexicon of motifs and compositional structures. His works frequently blend traditional and contemporary elements, incorporating a range of influences, inspirations, techniques and motifs from Samoa and Aotearoa and more generally from Euro-American to Pacific cultures. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatu_Feu%27u

Select four designs in your workbook. Use oil pastels to create the tone, form and colour of these motifs. Try to choose a variety of designs while looking closely at the detail, grid design and mark making.
